This gives the poorest of the poor real political muscle for the first time.

It is this movement of church people and trade unionists, soccer moms and student activists, that will carry the spirit of Live 8 on. It is this movement, not rock stars, that will make it untenable in the future to break promises to the most vulnerable people on this planet.

That was always why we put on the concerts.”

-Bono

Teenaged Model Jennifer Connelly showing off 80’s fashion...

Teenaged Model Jennifer Connelly showing off 80’s fashion (‘86)

The Joshua Tree is the fifth studio album by rock band U2,...

The Joshua Tree is the fifth studio album by rock band U2, released on March 9, 1987 on Island Records.

The album is dedicated to lead singer Bono’s assistant, Greg Carroll, who was killed in a motorcycle accident during the album’s recording.

The Joshua Tree that was featured in photographs and as a logo in the album’s artwork, the initial concept for the sleve was to represent where the desert met civilization.

Corbijn told the band about Joshua trees, hardy and twisted plants in the deserts of the American Southwest, and he suggested their use on the sleve. Bono consulted the Bible and was pleased to discover the religious signicance of the plant’s etymology, according to Mormon legend, early settlers referred to the Joshua Tree as “the praying plant” and said that its branches represented the Old Testament prophet Joshua raising his hands in prayer. The following day, Bono declared that the album should be titled “The Joshua Tree”.
